Help Jackson County 4-H Program Recieve $400
Receive $400 for your County 4-H Program
Thanks to generous support from John Deere, a $400 award will be presented to one county from each state (and one U.S. territory) with the highest number of individual Biofuel Blast results survey submissions between October 1st and October 30th, 2009. The awards can be used toward the implementation and promotion of science, engineering and technology programs in your county. After youth complete the experiment, make sure that they go here to fill out the survey so your county can compete for the award!
In addition, of those who submit their results through the Biofuel Blast experiment survey, five youth names will be randomly selected to receive a 32GB third generation iPod touch. The five youth will also be able to designate a 4-H club, school classroom, or youth organization to receive one of the pictured Fuel Cell Car Experiment kits. Click here for official drawing rules.
Ask the Expert
Dr. Bruce E. Dale, Professor of Chemical Engineering at Michigan State University, will be taking questions from youth and adults interested in learning more about biofuels. He is a leader of the recently established Department of Energy Great Lakes Bioenergy Research Center (GLBRC) who work to develop cellulosic ethanol and other bioenergy sources. University of Wisconsin Extension worked closely with the GLBRC to develop this year’s National Science Experiment – Biofuel Blast!
Click here to learn how you can submit questions for consideration. Answers will be posted before 4-H National Youth Science Day, October 7, 2009.
Don’t Forget, Promote Your Events!
Just a reminder to email us at 4-HNYSD@4-H.org with details about your upcoming 4-H NYSD events. Please include event dates, locations, and contact information to be added to the map of 4-H National Youth Science Day events!
4-H National Youth Science Day is only three weeks away – pass the word!
Ice Cream Recipe
For those of you that want to re-create the ice cream treat we had at the last meeting, here is the recipe! Feel free to modify it and come up with your own gourmet specialty! If you do, please be sure to comment below with your new recipe so we all can try it. If you take pictures of your results, please send them to the hc4H list and we’ll post them here!
1 cup milk
1/2 cup whole cream
1/2 teaspoon vanilla
1/4 cup sugar
Place all the ingredients in a bowl and stir together well until the sugar is dissolved. Pour mixture into a sandwich sized zip-lock-style baggie.Make sure the seal is well sealed.
Place ice cubes with liberal amounts of salt stirred in another bowl and mix well. This lowers the freezing temperature of the ice and allows the ice cream to solidify quickly. We used between a half a box to a whole 1 pound box of ordinary table salt to a bag (about 8 pounds) of ice.
Fill a gallon size baggie half full with the ice. Place the ice cream mixture baggie on top of the ice and fill the remaining bag full of ice. Seal closed the outside bag and gently toss for approximately 10 minutes until the inner ice cream baggie becomes firm and frozen. You might want to wrap it with a towel, as it does become very cold! Carefully remove the inside baggie from the outside baggie when it has reached the firmness you desire, and your treat is ready to enjoy.
This idea was liberally borrowed from http://www.howtoons.com .
Orientation Meeting
We had a gangbuster turnout to our Orientation Meeting on Friday, September 11! Kudos to our speaker, Cammy Marble, for bringing her presentation from the VFW Ladies’ Auxiliary on Citizenship. I know the youth were pleased to have the goodie bag she shared with everyone too. Here are the photos that were taken during the meeting last Friday. Do you see yourself in any? Orientation Meeting Friday 9-11-09
Just a quick reminder that our Orientation meeting is tomorrow!!! If you didn’t get to make it to our open house, not to worry, you still have time to join 4-H this year and be involved with our co-op.
We are meeting at the East Independence Church of Christ on 291 Hwy, just north of 23rd Street in Independence. If you need directions, please click on the orange “Directions” tab. Please arrive at 9:45 a.m. so we can start our meeting promptly at 10 a.m.
If you would please print out the Youth Membership and health forms and fill them out as much as possible for each child, it would greatly streamline the meeting tomorrow. If you want to become a volunteer and help lead some project(s), you can also print and fill out the Adult volunteer application and health forms. A quick link to the forms can be found on the blog post here:
http://homescool4h.org/?p=108
4-H dues for the youth are $20 per year per child. This fee includes an insurance that covers that child during 4-H sponsored activities. Fees for the Adult volunteers are $2, which covers insurance for the volunteer as well.
We will be having a fun demonstration of making ice cream tomorrow and a brief program on citizenship in addition to our regular monthly business meeting. We are planning for a fun year, and we hope you can join us!
Jackson County 4-H Code of Conduct
Character Development is the cornerstone of the 4-H program, and therefore the Jackson County 4-H Council and Equine Council expects all people involved with the 4-H program to exemplify the six pillars of character, Trustworthiness, Fairness, Respect, Responsibility, Caring, and Citizenship. To make sure that you are aware of these expectations, ALL 4-H members, parents and volunteers who wish to be considered in good standing will need to sign this Jackson County 4-H Code of Conduct in order to be enrolled in the Jackson County 4-H program. Please click on the link, print it out and bring it with your membership and health forms to the Orientation meeting Sept. 11th.
Members, parents and volunteers are being asked to sign these forms and return them with their completed enrollment forms. However, if a signed code of conduct is not returned with enrollment forms by May 1st of the current 4-H year, 4-H members and leaders will be considered inactive, meaning they will be ineligible to compete for the current 4-H year.
This code of conduct will need to be signed every year of membership or volunteering, they will be kept on file in the Extension Office.
If you have any questions about the code of conduct, please contact the Jackson County Extension office at 816-252-5051.

Anyone interested in participating in any of the shooting sports projects (numbered from 740 to 749) SHOULD attend this meeting. Fall safety meetings will be held at the Blue Springs office on October 18 and November 1. You must attend both days for certification. Call Susan to pre-register and to get times.
